Coming Academic Year 2009-2010

Please read the following and contact us if you’d like to participate.

Thank you!

The LA NICHE Journal is our companion site that will serve as a public venue for LA NICHE members, home educated students, and others who wish to publish articles and other offerings for our local homeschool community.

The LA NICHE Journal

…will be just as the name suggests, a journal site with volumes or issues such as a formal periodical would have and the authors will be -for the most part- from our local homeschool community.

A cycle of set monthly themes will be established to enable advanced ‘line-up’ of authors offering both the authors and the Journal plenty of lead-time for optimal professionalism. However, we are not a ‘professional’ journal as such, and most of our authors won’t be either, but we do hope to develop a product our homeschool community will find useful, informative, encouraging, and of course, something we can all be happy to claim as our homeschool community’s journal.

Each issue will have several authors with possible regular features for each issue such as ‘further reading’ suggestions, resource links, and others yet to be determined.

Here is our tentative theme outline:

August – Back to School

  • Broad variety from lesson plans and teaching methods to keeping a personal journal or blog

September – Arts & Extra-Curricular

October – Leadership & Vision

  • Good issue for ‘dad authors’, local pastors, those in ministry, and others who have a heart to write about leadership and vision

November – Giving Thanks

December – Christmas

  • Broad variety from Advent and ‘THE reason for the seasom’ to family traditions, recipes, and countdown planning

January – Student Authors

February – Faith & Marriage: Refreshment & Encouragement

  • Articles intended to refresh after a busy first semester and holiday season and to renew our faith and keep us on the right track as we finish our academic year
  • Marriage and romance beyond Valentines Day
  • Possible follow-up articles to October’s Leadership & Vision issue with focus on Marriage

March – High School to College

  • Planning, transcripts, SAT, college applications, college profiles, driver’s education, work experience, life skills
  • Homeschool-alumni author perspectives
  • Purity, Godly character, spiritual preparation for adulthood

April – Student Authors

May – Convention Seasons & Plotting the Course for Next Year

June – The Class of…

  • Featured authors will be parents of graduates, graduates, and other authors offering highlights regarding our community’s graduates, ceremonies, and celebrations

July – Local Homeschool Organizations

  • Each homeschool organization will be offered an opportunity to submit an article about their organization (all submissions published)

Student Author Issues

There are currently two issues annually devoted to student authors. This may be something individual parents or co-ops would want to consider as an option when assigning writing or research assignments; one issue in January for first semester projects and April for second semester projects. April was chosen as May is typically a busy ‘wrap-up’ month for everyone.

Students may be authors in any issue should there be a desire; however, two issues annually will be devoted to student authors.

Authors

Contributions to The LA NICHE Journal need not be lengthy articles. An average blog-post length will be sufficient, but approximate word-counts will be offered as we move forward.

Authors retain full copyright to their written work and will be asked to write a short, several-sentence biographical piece, including copyright statement, that will appear at the end of their contribution to the Journal.

The LA NICHE Journal Staff

Ideally, we’ll have twelve people to annually organize one issue (theme) per person, lining up authors well in advance to ensure a pleasurable experience for all, with several people overseeing the entire endeavor including editorial duties.

The LA NICHE Journal is one of several companion sites to the
LA NICHE online group at Yahoo! Groups.

The online group at Yahoo! Groups is our main site and where the mission of LA NICHE is truly fulfilled as it is our venue for connecting local homeschool families to each other… and to groups, organizations, and activities for enhancing their children’s Christian education. The format of the Yahoo! Group allows for conversation, sharing of ideas and opportunities available, and for privacy within its members-only forum. Membership to our online group is free.

BEFORE joining, please read ‘How to Join LA NICHE‘ to get familiar with the Yahoo! Sign-Up system.

At the LA NICHE Blog you’ll find a mix of highlights and links from all the LA NICHE Companion Sites and and from our local homeschool community. The LA NICHE Blog also serves as the hub for technical assistance and how-to’s regarding various Yahoo! services and our site at Yahoo! Groups.

LA NICHE Resources is our newest companion site. It is currently in development and will untimately provide our homeschool community with a vast array of resources pertinent to Christian family life and home education. You are encouraged to make resource recommendations and requests for the site.

LA NICHE in the LOUNGE is another place for LA NICHE members to meet.  It is located in the Homeschool Lounge. The Homeschool Lounge (THL) is a free online community exclusively for Homeschool Moms. The vision of THL is to connect Homeschool Moms from all corners of the web.  Similarly, the mission of LA NICHE is to connect Christian homeschool families from all corners of the Lynchburg area, so we are delighted to offer our own members a niche of their own in the Homeschool Lounge!
